Page Layout and SEO
You might want to know that there is something related to the page layout and SEO. You website ranking will be affected if you have the wrong layout on your website.
According to Google in one of the blog released by Google in 2012. If your website have too many advertisement above-the-fold, then your ranking will be penalized. The aim according to Google was to give visitors to your website a better experience.
Some people complaint that when they visited some websites, they had to scroll down and past lots of advertisement to get to the content. So response to this complaint, Google had changed their “Page Layout Algorithm Improvement” and penalize websites which has a lot of ads at the beginning of their content.
This is the exact wording from Google, “This algorithmic change does not affect sites who place ads above-the-fold to a normal degree, but affects sites that go much further to load the top of the page with ads to an excessive degree or that make it hard to find the actual original content on the page.”
Above-the-fold means the part of the display on the screen which is just underneath the header. Reason webmaster do this is because we will get a better conversion rate when our advertisements are on the top. We all wants to make more money, don’t we? So we cannot do this if this is going to hurt our ranking.
If you are just starting to build your website, then obviously you can avoid doing this and not put too much ads on the top of the page. One or two ads doesn’t harm.
If you are one of the unlucky one and you have already done this and found that your website ranking is low. Then you have to redo the layout and take out all the ads, and put them on the sidebar or put them down the bottom. The upsetting part is you have to wait a few weeks before Googlebot will re-crawl and re-index your page before they improve your site ranking. They said your ranking will be re-value as soon as your website has be crawled.
