How To Find Your Niche Market
The very first thing an affiliate marketer should learn is how to find your niche market. Don’t just pick anything out of the blue without doing a detailed research. You don’t want to develop your website and find out later you picked a bad niche. As a result, you wasted a few months of your time and effort. Therefore, it is better to research it a little bit more.
What is a niche?
A niche is a subset of a market for a specific product.
For example, if the bicycle is the product you want to do. Then you can pick a niche (a subset) as in children’s bicycle, ladies bicycle or performance bicycle.
Or if you are interested in fashion. Then you can pick teen fashion, men’s fashion or funky fashion, etc.
Why do we want to pick a subset of a market? What are the benefits?
The reason why you want to pick a niche is because you want to be the authority of this niche product. When you recommend a product to your audience, you will be seen as an expert in this field. Since you cannot be an expert for everything – maybe you are but who would believe you? Therefore, it is better to focus in one smaller area instead of being too board.
The benefits when you are focus:-
- Reduce competition.
- Greater trust from your audience and credibility.
- More focus will lead to maximizing of profit
- Easy to tailor to your audience. Since you are speaking to one specific group of people.
- You will have result quicker.
Now you understand why you need to choose a specific niche market. You have to find out what you want to do.
Spend a few minutes and think about what you would like to do for your niche. It is best if it is something you enjoy doing. A hobby, a profession or something you would like to learn.
Just pick something and don’t worry about it too much at this moment. I will guide you through the process and you will see if you have picked a good niche. Get a piece of paper and write down your niche. So start with one first.
My niche is:__________________________________________

After you have signed up, you can click “Keyword Tool” on the left-hand side. Here is what you will see.
Enter your keyword in the box.
To give you an example, I would like Toothpick Games as my niche. So I will enter Toothpick games in the box and click “Search for Keywords”. I have the result as show below.
We will see later on from the search result to see if Toothpick Games is a good niche or not.
The result is shown on the first line for “toothpick games”
- You can see Searches= 88 (last month 88 people search for this keyword).
- Traffic = 15, this one is just a guess. (It means if you website comes up in a search on the first page, approximately 15 people will click on your website).
- Competition, I will explain later.
- Article Power, this score is from 1 to 10 (where 10 is best and 1 is worst). If you write an article, how easy is it for you to get to page 1 in Google search result.
- PPC Power, (PPC – pay per click). Don’t worry about this at this moment.
You can see that even if I can get all the traffic from Google search, I will only get 88 people who will click on my website in a month. From the list above, there are no other keywords which are related to my toothpick games. Hence, this is all the traffic I will get. Therefore, this is not a good niche because fewer clicks mean less potential customers.
If you look down the list, you can see “Monopoly Game” has 14161 searches, and this will be a better niche than my toothpick niche.
Let us try and put “Monopoly Game” in the search box and see what we get.
You can see that there are other keywords that people used to find Monopoly Games, so there are lot more potential customers. Hence this is potentially a good niche.
Since I don’t like monopoly so I cannot use this niche. I will try another niche I like, “Health Supplements”.
It looks promising. When you add the first 2 lines, health supplements and health supplement together. The monthly searches are about 18,000. I will have lots of potential customers.
This is only the first step. There are couple more things I want to look at before I decide if I want this niche.
I want to use Google Trends to find out if this Health Supplements niche is popular or not. (Open up a browser and type in google trends, then open up Google Trends and type in my niche in the “Explore Topics” box). Here is what I got below.
We can see from the last ten years, people are consistently interested in health supplements. Therefore, it is a good niche. It is better to have a niche which has more Interest Over Time when the graph is going up.
(It also provide you with Regional Interest, which countries have interest on this topic).
The next thing I want to look at is the number of competition websites. Let’s open up the Wealthy Affiliate Keyword Tool again and key in Health Supplements. Then click on “View Result” on the same line and you will see as show below.
It says there are 449 results, it means there are 449 websites relating to “health supplements”. I have 449 competitors in this niche, which is not too bad.
The next thing I want to check – are there a product I can promote within my niche. There is no better place than Amazon. I checked and Amazon has the products that I wanted. I have also checked another company “Commission Junction” and they also have health supplement products.
I have come to conclusion that this Healthy Supplements niche is good for the following reasons:-
- Reasonable monthly traffic – over 18,000/monthly search
- Not too many competitors, 463 which is not too bad. I would not want a niche with more than 500 competitors.
- There is product available to promote
Before I make the final decision, there are one more things that I want to check – my competitors and who are they?
I opened up the Google search results and read some of the websites on the first page, second page and so on. I found that the articles are published by doctors and health professionals. This is no good, how could I compete with them? Since I have no background in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries. It would be very difficult to me, if not impossible, to gain trust from my audience. My conclusion, this is not a suitable niche for me.
“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”― Sun Tzu,
Knowing yourself and your competitors are important to your success when choosing your niche.
Now it is your turn and find out for yourself if your niche is good or bad. If the first one is not good, then try a second one or a third one.
